William G. Morgan created the game of volleyball which was a combination of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball created to have less physical contact than other sports. It was origianlly called mintonette. Morgan borrowed the net from tennis, and raised it 6 feet 6 inches above the floor, just above the average man's head.
The name of the game was changed to volleyball during a demonstration when a spectator commented that it appeared that they were volleying back and forth over the net. It was then that it was changed to the name of Volleyball
